ESSAY: Should higher education remain tuition-free
for everybody, regardless of their economic status?
Higher education tuitions vary from one to country to another.
Particularly in Mexico, the vast majority of students are enrolled to public
schools (70%) where students pay no tuition for their education but the real
problem is that only 3 of 10 students have the opportunity to study higher
education because there are not enough available spaces. Because of this, there
is no place for a tuition in higher education.
Analyzing the trend of economics in the majority of people it would be
almost impossible to afford a tuition in schools. During the last three decades
of Mexico there has been a slow financial grow in the
country besides the increasing population. This is generating a great demand and a low
supply for most of the services including education.
Mexico is badly ranked in education performance compared to the rest of
the world, located a at the 54th place in maths and science worldwide. Making a division in the
students who have to pay a tuition and those who don´t will generate a
difference in quality of education and creating tensions
between students.
Sharp social and economic differences in Mexico are seen since many years ago, and education
is not an exception.
It is stated in the Constitution of Mexico that every person has the
right to receive free education, and economic status mustn't be the reason to
appeal this right. Approximately more than half of the population in Mexico has
a low socioeconomic status, so to be fair and to generalize education policies,
higher education must be free of tuitions.
Economics is the most important problem in setting up tuitions for some
students. Generating differences among students in public schools will
affect the quality of the students. And finally, inequalities are seen in most
of the topics in our country so why to make another one?
Higher education has to remain tuition free for everyone.
